India VIX
Why India VIX matters
India VIX is the market's own forward-looking estimate of how much NIFTY is expected to move over the next 30 days — not a historical measure, and not derived by us. It's computed and published directly by NSE from the live order book of near and next-month NIFTY options, the same way the CBOE VIX is computed for the S&P 500.
Reading VIX
Above ~20 is generally read as elevated fear; below ~15 as complacency — there's no fixed threshold, read it relative to its own recent range. It tends to spike ahead of events (budget, elections, RBI policy) and decay afterward, mirroring the per-strike IV patterns on the volatility skew page.
- Rising VIX with falling NIFTY — the classic fear signal, demand for downside protection rising alongside the sell-off.
- Falling VIX with rising NIFTY — complacency building as the rally continues, often the more common regime.
- VIX spiking with NIFTY roughly flat — the market is pricing in an upcoming event before it's reflected in spot.
Methodology & data
This is NSE's own official computation, streamed live — not back-solved or estimated by us. Compare it against per-strike IV on the volatility page: VIX is one market-wide number, that page is the skew across individual strikes. Spot only for now — a historical chart is a separate build.
What is India VIX?
NSE's official volatility index, measuring the market's expectation of NIFTY's movement over the next 30 days, computed from the live order book of near and next-month NIFTY options.
What is considered a high VIX level?
There's no fixed threshold — above ~20 is generally read as elevated, below ~15 as complacent, but it's best read relative to its own recent range rather than an absolute number.
How is India VIX different from per-strike implied volatility?
VIX is a single, market-wide number computed by NSE across the near-term NIFTY option chain. The volatility skew page shows implied volatility per individual strike, which can vary meaningfully even while VIX itself stays flat.
