Why OI analysis matters

Open interest (OI) is the count of live option contracts that haven't yet been closed or exercised. Where OI concentrates, and how it changes intraday, shows where traders have actually committed capital — not just where price is trading. A big change in OI at a strike, especially combined with a price move, tells you whether new positions are being opened or existing ones closed.

How to read this page

  • Raw PCR vs Weighted PCR — raw put-call ratio treats every strike's OI equally; weighted PCR weights each strike's OI by its own premium, which damps the noise deep out-of-the-money strikes add to the raw ratio.
  • Total OI by strike — where call and put open interest concentrate right now, often read alongside max pain.
  • Buildup classification — combines price and OI direction since today's open into four labels: LONG BUILDUP (price up, OI up), SHORT BUILDUP (price down, OI up), SHORT COVERING (price up, OI down), LONG UNWINDING (price down, OI down).
  • Intraday OI evolution — how OI at the top strikes has moved through the session, not just where it stands now.
  • Max pain trajectory — how the max-pain strike itself has shifted intraday relative to spot.

Methodology & data

Buildup and activity are measured against today's open — the session's first captured snapshot, not a fixed reference point. Weighted PCR weights each strike's OI by its own premium. All figures update live from the AngelOne/NSE feed during market hours.

What is the difference between raw PCR and weighted PCR?

Raw PCR is total put OI divided by total call OI, treating every strike equally. Weighted PCR weights each strike's OI by its own premium, reducing the influence of deep out-of-the-money strikes that carry large OI but little premium.

What does "long buildup" mean?

Price rising alongside rising open interest — new long positions being added, not just existing shorts covering. The opposite combination (price falling, OI rising) is "short buildup."

What is max pain?

The strike price at which option writers as a group would owe the least at expiry — often watched as a magnet level, though it's not a guarantee of where price will settle.
