Why OI analysis matters for crypto options

Deribit lists dozens of expiries simultaneously — aggregate OI shows where positioning concentrates across the whole chain, not just the nearest weekly. Buildup since UTC-day open highlights fresh commitment as global sessions roll.

How to read this page

  • Raw vs weighted PCR — weighted uses OI × mark price per strike, damping far-OTM noise.
  • Buildup labels — same four-way classification as Indian indices: long/short buildup, covering, unwinding.
  • Max pain trajectory — how the aggregate max-pain strike moved through the UTC day vs spot.

Methodology

Source: archived Deribit all snapshots in chain_history.db. Premiums are coin-margined mark prices. Volume is not published on this feed — activity table omits it. See also max pain today, gamma exposure, OI buildup explained.

Why UTC-day open, not IST?

Crypto options trade 24/7 — UTC midnight is a neutral session boundary. Indian index OI analysis uses IST market open instead.

Single expiry or all expiries?

All listed expiries aggregated by strike — matches the public max-pain lander. Per-expiry view: multi-venue or terminal.
